SEO for Beginners – Part 2

14/11/2013

To make sure your website is search engine friendly you must check all of the pages compliancy within the search engine regulations. Then and only then your webpages are ready to be indexed in correct fashion.

Below are some of the steps that should be followed for every page on your website.

Once you have made your list of relevant keywords you will be inserting them into your webpages.

Page Title

Make the webpage title short and concise as possible. Keywords inclusion is not a priority but it can be used wherever possible and you must avoid changing the purpose of the title. Here is the example:

<title>Brisbane Shelving</title>

Metatags

Put the description and keywords metatags in the head of each webpage. Make different tags on each webpage.

<meta name="description" content="Brisbane Shelving is offering you quality merchandise at affordable prices.">
<meta name="keywords" content="furniture, wardrobes, sliding doors, office, store, shop, retail, discount">

Heading Tags

Don’t forget to use heading tags. Vast majority of search engines is placing their attention on text inside heading tags, therefore keyword usage is a priority. Use only one <h1> tag per webpage with the keywords that are most important. Other head tags (<h2>, <h3>, etc…) should be used to provide alternatives and a cornerstone of the main heading.

<h1>Furniture</h1>
<h2>Wardrobes</h2>
<p>... information about wardrobes...</p>
<h2>Walk in wardrobes</h2>
<p>... information about walk in wardrobes, etc etc...</p>

The text of your webpages should contain keywords and common phrases which could be used in search. Be extremely cautious with keyword stuffing – use keywords only couple of times if possible. DO NOT repeat yourself frequently – in that way you will avoid your copy to become unnatural or meaningless. The idea behind it all is the discrete spreading of the keywords without making it apparent.

<p>Buy wardrobes at affordable prices from any of our retail stores.</p>

Text contained within images will not be recognised by search engines. Only actual text on the page will be indexed.

Note:

All of these moderation methods should be used. By including hundreds of keywords in metatags or overusing the heading tags on your webpage, all their effectiveness will be lost (and you may be penalised in various different ways). Simplicity and control for maximum effect.

“Skipping the basics and spending all your time and money on social and ‘fancy stuff’ is the same as skipping brushing your teeth and showering, but buying white strips and wearing expensive cologne,” according to Carolyn Shelby.

Cheers!
